Origins
The early history of Toto that began in 1917, mirrored Japan's rapid economic growth. In the first half of 1917, Toto manufactured products to meet the growing demand for modern, new urban housing. It was the first tunnel kiln in the nation to continuously produce ceramics. It also pioneered the use of automation for production control, which helps to increase efficiency and consistency.
In the latter half of the 1980s, the company began to expand overseas to take advantage of sales and new markets. It launched the Cera Trading Company, importing and distributing other products from other manufacturers to complement its own lines of sanitary earthenware and plumbing fittings. This strategy increased sales and expanded the firm’s global market share.
In the 90s, Toto began to focus on research and development of water-related appliances. It also improved its system of distribution to better serve its customers and improve profit. The company employed the same approach of just-in-time in its supply chain management and sales program. This resulted in a higher degree of customer satisfaction.
Toto has been able to continue to innovate on the toilet technology. The latest toilet, for example it has a strong tornado flush that is more ecologically green than traditional toilets. The company also makes use of recycled water in its production process and has a green purchasing policy. In addition to toilets, Toto produces bathtubs and faucets and hand dryers that are more efficient in energy use than standard models.
The first museum of the company opened in 2015 It has exhibits about Toto's iconic products and their development and its group companies (all that deal with ceramics), history of plumbing and other products like bath units and, in a different gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum also includes a bathroom with the WASHLET toilet, as well as other toilet-related innovations.
Before the formation of Toto the members of the group performed session work for various musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro, and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all played on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also performed on albums by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.

Bobby Kimball's growing ability to play was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard skills were also more sophisticated, sharper and less akin to previous recordings.
After touring to promote their album, the band recorded an Amsterdam live concert that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. A new studio album was released just a few months later and the band embarked on a world-wide tour in support of the album. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old demo tapes and tapes to make a new record featuring songs that were never recorded before. It was completed in 2001 as a duo album called Then and Now. It was the first album by the band not to include one single track with the word "A" in its title. It also included one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and singer Williams was suffering from a serious laryngitis condition which limited his singing capabilities. Additionally, Hungate returned to Nashville, while drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes along with the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in early 2006 to discuss the possibility of reforming the band. This lineup, minus Howe who was busy with Yes at the time, was renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also had a special appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
